Ambassador Group completed this search for a high-end residential general contractor in the San Francisco Bay Area. The firm is small enough for leadership to know the team and stay involved with clients and projects every week, and large enough to take on big, complicated work. Principals are involved at every level, the environment is collaborative, and employee retention is high.
Role SummaryThe Accounting Manager reports directly to the COO and owns core financial operations: payroll, billing, monthly close, and project accounting. The role is task-intensive and suits a construction-savvy accounting professional who wants to help shape better systems alongside leadership. Hybrid flexibility is possible after an initial ramp-up of 4 to 6 months.

- Project-level financial tracking is accurate and GAAP compliant, and supports percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
- The accounts payable function is managed directly, alongside preliminary notices, compliance filings, and owner billings.
- Back-office systems improve in partnership with the COO, such as moving from manual timesheets to digital platforms and evaluating longer-term accounting software upgrades.
- 5 to 10 or more years of accounting experience in construction, ideally with a general contractor.
- Deep fluency in Sage 100, which is required.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP; formal credentials are not required, but practical fluency is.
- Experience with payroll systems, 401(k) administration, and job cost accounting.
- Knowledge of Sage Intacct, S-Corp tax implications, and cash balance plans, and experience migrating accounting systems, are a plus.
- An operator mindset, proactive problem solving, a collaborative and flexible style, and clear communication with field and office teams.
