Why Zoom Interviews Should Be Camera-On
Hiring is high risk, so why make it harder by hiding your face?

A job interview is more than a conversation. It is a test of clarity, presence, and relational fit. When the camera stays off, both sides lose critical context.
1. Communication is more than words
Eye contact, facial expressions, and posture all communicate as much as the answers themselves. Without video, interviewers are guessing at intent, confidence, and engagement.
2. Trust depends on visibility
Hiring is already high risk. Seeing someone’s face helps build trust quickly and prevents the awkward distance that comes with a voice-only call.
3. Professionalism is demonstrated in small choices
Showing up on video says, “I take this seriously.” It shows preparedness, comfort with technology, and respect for the interviewer’s time.
4. Alignment is easier to judge
Companies are not only hiring skills, they are hiring collaborators. Video provides a sense of how someone might interact day to day, which is hard to replicate otherwise.
Bottom line: Turning on your camera in a Zoom interview is not optional courtesy, it is part of showing up fully. Candidates who want to stand out should treat the camera as essential, not negotiable.
How to Ask Candidates to Turn Cameras On
Pre-interview confirmation (email or calendar invite):
“We will be conducting this interview via Zoom. To create the best experience for both sides, we ask that cameras remain on during the conversation. This helps us connect more fully and gives everyone a better sense of fit.”
At the start of the interview (if cameras are off):
“Hi [Name], good to meet you. If possible, could you turn on your camera? We find it really helps with communication and building rapport during interviews.”
If resistance comes up:
“I understand video is not always comfortable, but seeing each other makes the conversation more natural and gives us the chance to connect more authentically. Even if your background is not perfect, that is not a concern, we just want to see you.”
