Accounting Manager
FMA Builders is hiring an Accounting Manager to take ownership of core financial operations and lead the next chapter of modernization in its back-office systems. This is a high-impact, task-intensive role suited for a construction-savvy accounting professional who thrives in fast-paced, high-volume environments and is excited to partner with leadership on long-term systems improvements. Youโll report directly to the COO and serve as the go-to resource for payroll, billing, monthly close, and project accountingโensuring stability today and helping shape better processes for tomorrow.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a mission-critical role at a top-tier Bay Area builder, with the potential to help modernize the accounting function alongside an experienced and forward-thinking leadership team. Hybrid flexibility is possible after the initial 4โ6 month ramp-up period.
Key Responsibilities:

Full-Cycle Accounting & Payroll Management:
Own Sage 100 Contractor workflows including payroll processing, billing every two weeks, monthly/quarterly/year-end close, 401(k) contributions, and tax payments.

Construction Project Accounting:
Oversee project-level financial tracking, ensure GAAP compliance, and support percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.

Operational Oversight & AP Coordination:
Directly manage the AP function (currently staffed by Mabel), and act as a utility player on tasks like preliminary notices, compliance filings, and owner billings.

System Maintenance & Improvement:
Partner with the COO on process improvement efforts, such as transitioning from manual timesheets to digital platforms and evaluating long-term accounting software upgrades.
Hard Skills:
โ 5โ10+ years of accounting experience in construction, ideally with a general contractor
โ Deep fluency in Sage 100โnon-negotiable
โ Strong working knowledge of GAAP; formal credentials not required, but practical fluency is
โ Experience with payroll systems, 401(k) administration, and job cost accounting
โ Bonus: Knowledge of Sage Intacct, S-Corp tax implications, Cash Balance Plan, and experience migrating accounting systems
